 Unknown gunmen have attacked the country home of the governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma. The gunmen who invaded the governor’s village house in Omuma in the Oru East Local Government Area of the state in early hours of Saturday killed two security men on duty before torching it. Our correspondent’s investigation revealed that one of the security men killed was an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. According to a village source who pleaded anonymity, cars parked at the compound and part of the building were affected by the fire. According to the source, the security men on duty repelled the gunmen, leading to the death of the two cops. An unconfirmed news also has it that the gunmen killed two other security men at Oguta-Mgbidi Junction, a road that leads to the governor’s country home

  A popular Nigerian comedienne, Mercy Cynthia Ginikachukwu, fondly referred to as Ada Jesus, is dead. The comedienne died two days after celebrating her birthday. The young lady had been battling kidney disease that left her incapacitated before her death. Her death was announced by one Harrison Gwamnishu, who had been taking care of the ailing comedienne. Gwamnishu led a group of Nigerians that took the comedienne to the hospital for medical treatment. In a post via his Instagram handle, the young man wrote, “Thank you, everyone. Rest in Power Mercy Nmesoma Nnadi @adajesuscomedy”. Moreso, during an exclusive chat with The Punch Gwamnishu said that the comedienne died this morning at 7:15 am. He said, “Yes, she is dead. Three people were shot late on Sunday by some suspected gunmen, who invaded Koka Village in the Obokun Local Government area of Osun State. According to information from A resident, who preferred anonymity said that she was already in bed around 11:30 pm when about eight gunmen invaded the village. She said the attackers divided themselves into two groups, with the first set of four men entering houses and bringing out the residents, while another set mounted surveillance on the road leading into the village. Another resident, simply identified as Tayo Ola, also said a building that the gunmen entered first when they arrived the village was damaged with a bullet. Ola also said three villagers were shot but none was taken away by the attackers, adding that the arrival of hunters put them under pressure and made them fled into the bush.

  Gunmen numbering about 20 in the early hours of Monday attacked the Zonal Police Headquarters, Zone13, Ukpo, Anambra State. They razed some offices and scores of vehicles during the attack. Reasons behind the attack could not be ascertained as of press time. A police officer, who pleaded anonymity, said the hoodlums were rebuffed from getting into the armoury department of the place. He said, “Our men prevented them from having ingress into our armoury. I can’t tell you the number of casualties now because we have scanty information about the development.” A bystander said there was heavy gunshots before the offices and vehicles were set ablaze.

  The Dean of Students’ Affairs, Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi in Edo State, Dr Shola Eshiobo, is dead. A family source who craved anonymity said the lifeless body of Eshiobo was discovered in his office on Sunday morning. The source said the wife of the deceased raised an alarm after her husband failed to return home since he left for the office on Saturday. The House of Representatives has faulted the Federal Government for giving schools the go-ahead to resume on Monday despite the increasing cases of COVID-19. The House said government officials did not consult the relevant committees of the National Assembly, contrary to their claim that all relevant stakeholders were consulted before arriving at the January 18, 2021, resumption date. It, therefore, demanded postponement of resumption for three months, where necessary safety measures weren’t put in place and compliance with protocols low. Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, disclosed these in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Saturday. “They did not consult us; at least in my committee, nobody from the ministry spoke to me. I have been in Abuja. And I am not sure that they spoke to any of my members. They just don’t see us as part of the critical stakeholders,” he said.   The ongoing dialogue between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities will continue on Wednesday to enable the leadership to consult their organs on the conclusions reached at Thursday ’s meeting . The parley was convened to resolve the lingering issues that led to the strike by the university lecturers . The government has made some offers and commitments during the meeting which ASUU agreed to take back to their members for consideration . Presenting the outcome of the meeting , the Minister of Labour and Employment , Dr Chris Ngige , said that the government had pledged to pay N 40 billion, being the pending Earned Academic Allowance of the university teachers . He explained that out of that amount , N 30 bn would be paid on or before November 6 , while the remaining N 10 b would be spread equally over two tranches to be paid on May 2021 and February 2022 .   The Federal Government has agreed to release N 30 billion earned academic allowance to the university lecturers . The money will be paid in tranches between May 2021 and February 2022 .   It was gathered that the FG also promised to spend N20 billion on the revitalisation of the education sector as part of concessions meant to end the seven - month strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities . These were part of the agreements reached during the ongoing meeting between the FG and ASUU leadership on Thursday . Speaking earlier before going into a closed -door session , the Minister of Labour and Employment , Chris Ngige , said students were being recruited into the # EndSARS protests following the closure of universities occasioned by the ASUU strike.       The President of the Senate , Ahmad Lawan, has berated the Federal Government for signing an unrealistic agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities . He said , “When we negotiate , we must negotiate in such a manner that the final product will be implementable. “This is to say that we have to accommodate each other with government doing what it is supposed to do and ASUU , being the body of our lecturers , stands to protect its members .” Lawan said these on Monday when ASUU presented its alternative payroll system , the University Transparency and Accountability Solution , to the Senate .   The Inspector -General General of Police , Mohammed Adamu , says the training of a new police unit to replace the disbanded Special Anti -Robbery Squad will commence next week . He promised to investigate all cases of brutality by SARS operatives and bring the perpetrators to book . He said with SARS being disbanded , there was need to set up a new structure to carry out the duties of the defunct police unit which is fighting violent crimes.   Protest against police brutality , extortion and extra- judicial killings turned violent in the Surulere area of Lagos State on Monday . The PUNCH gathered that police officers shot indiscriminately to disperse the protesters . In the process , two of the protesters were reportedly hit by gunshots . One of those hit by the gunshot has been reported dead . The protesters had since shared pictures and videos of the victims on social media .
