One feared dead as #EndSARS protest turns violent in Surulere

Protest against police brutality , extortion and extra- judicial killings turned violent in the Surulere area of Lagos State on Monday .

The PUNCH gathered that police officers shot indiscriminately to disperse the protesters .

In the process , two of the protesters were reportedly hit by gunshots .

One of those hit by the gunshot has been reported dead .

The protesters had since shared pictures and videos of the victims on social media .

However , efforts to reach the Lagos Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi , proved abortive .

He also did not respond to a text message forwarded to him by our correspondent .

In the videos that surfaced online , the protesters were seen scampering to safety .

But the Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos State , Olumuyiwa Adejobi , told the News Agency of Nigeria denied that the protesters were not shot by policemen .

Instead, he noted that two other inspectors were critically wounded during the violent attack on their unit .

He said , “The protesters came in their numbers with the intent to break into the station at our Surulere unit and free some of the convicted criminals .

“They were heavily armed with shot guns and fired shots at the officers on duty who were trying to prevent the incidence and uphold the integrity of the station , ” he said .

Adejobi said that no arrest had been made yet but that investigation was ongoing and the perpetrators would be brought to book.

We just lost a Nigerian to a gunshot , at the Surulere protest 💔💔 💔 💔

The medical team did their best to keep him alive . The young Nigerian also put up a good fight .

Unfortunately , he couldn ’t make it...
