Angry youths from the Amakohia community in the Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State have set ablaze five houses belonging to suspected cultists , who allegedly murdered a pub operator identified as Mrs Uchechi Ogoke . Uchechi, whose husband is based in Malaysia , died on June 30 , 2020 , as a result of machete cuts inflicted on her by the hoodlums, who invaded her residence at night. Sources in the area , however , alleged that Uchechi ’s husband and his younger brother had a hand in her gruesome murder . According to the sources , the deceased ’s husband was uncomfortable with allegations that his wife was involved in extramarital affairs . The Kano Council of Ulamas , on Monday , rejected a proposal by the Kano State House of Assembly that rapists should be castrated . The state House of Assembly had adopted the proposal for the castration of confirmed rapists , following a motion sponsored by a member , Mr Nuraddeen Alhassan , on July 15 , 2020. A communiqué , signed by the Council ’s Chairman , Sheik Ibrahim Khalil , and made available to The PUNCH , noted that the council opposed the proposed castration , after due consultations, hence it was advocating a review of the Kano State Shari’ a Penal Code 2000. Khalil , however , pointed out that the council ’s position did not mean they were supporting the criminal act of rapists . He said the council had resolved to visit the House of Assembly for advice and possible solutions in line with Islamic injunction .”

Shortage of food , drugs and other relief materials has hit Southern Kaduna communities following persistent attacks by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militiamen. Four local government areas of Southern Kaduna – Zango -Kataf , Kaura , Kauru and Jemaa – have been under persistent attacks , forcing the state government to impose a curfew on them. Following a week -long attacks on communities in the LGAs and the inability of the villagers , who are subsistence farmers , to go to farm , hunger has crept into the communities. Sources said some of the Internally Displaced Persons camps , especially at Zonkwa , were being flooded by displaced villagers , including aged women and children . The Chairman of the Committee of Vice- Chancellors and Registrars of Private Universities , Prof . Timothy Olagbemiro , has said private universities are ready to resume . Olagbemiro , in an interview with our correspondent , said the private universities had big campuses with small population which would give room for social distancing . He maintained that resumption would be done in phases , adding that university laboratories also needed to be opened for researches to take place. “Once we are given the green light , we will put everything needed in place . The Federal Government on Monday said the Senior Secondary School 3 pupils will resume on August 4 in preparation for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination , which is starting on August 17 . The Federal Ministry of Education ’s Director of Press and Public Relations , Ben Bem Goong , who disclosed this in a statement titled , ‘ Exit classes to reopen August 4,’ said the decision to recall the pupils was taken during a virtual meeting involving the ministry and commissioners of education in the 36 states of the federation . The ministry said on resumption on August 4 , the pupils would have two weeks within which to prepare for WASSCE .
